VISHU Tolan, president of the Jamaica Badminton Association (JBA) and general secretary of Badminton Pan American Confederation (BPAC), was unanimously elected vice-president of the Pan Am of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) last Saturday at an extraordinary general meeting of BPAC.

Tolan was elected by the 17 delegates present, and will replace BPAC President Gustavo Salizar of Peru, who did not seek re-election for a post he has held for the past seven years. The changeover will take place in May when the BWF holds its AGM.

It is important to note that each regional confederation is represented by a vice-president on the BWF board.

Also, in a Caribbean Regional Badminton Confederation (CAREBACO) reconvened AGM held last Friday at the same venue, JBA first vice-president Audley Astwood was one of three members appointed to an interim CAREBACO management committee. The committee’s main tasks will be to ensure the smooth running of the next CAREBACO Championships, and to oversee the continuation of the revamping of the CAREBACO constitution for presentation at their next Annual General Meeting due to be held in August. At that time, elections will be held.

The five positions available on the CAREBACO council will be president, vice-president, secretary/ treasurer and two floor members. The other two members of that interim committee are Barbadians Mervyn Gordon and Dionne Haynes. Former secretary/treasurer Gordon had, up to that point, been spearheading the drafting of a new constitution.
