Samuel Ricketts won the U19 finals of the Suriname Easter tournament defeating the #1 seed Soren Opti in 2 sets 21-15, 21-10. This is an excellent result for Samuel and will do well for his confidence for the up-coming Pan American Junior Badminton Championships to be held in Guatemala in July. Samuel arrived in Suriname on Thursday and was unseeded in the draw. He beat 3 seeded players on his way to the taking the title.

Samuel also did very well in the Open’s Men’s division , where he also played in the singles event. He played very well up to the finals where he lost to Suriname’s #1 senior player Virgil Soeroredjo 9-21, 15-21. A good game, with good rallies, but quite a high number of unforced errors were made on Ricketts part. Samuel will go into exams now, and continue to train for other international tournaments that he will participate in this year. This will make him one of the top seeds for the U-19 division of the Caribbean Badminton Championships, which will be held in Jamaica this year, from August 7th to the 15th.

This result all goes down well for both Samuel and the new administration, as part of their mandate is to both improve the level of our players while giving them as much exposure as possible. Samuel Ricketts is from Mandiville and is coached by Howard Ranger & Dr. Kingsley Ford. This trip was made possible through negotiations with the president Robert Richards and Ansjari Somedjo the tournament director.

We were trying to send more players especially from our inner-city program, but sponsorship for these players did not materialize.

We again thank the Sports Development foundation and encourage Private sector to partner with us as we create a product that will give your company excellent mileage.
