Jamaica Gets Ready For The World

Jamaica’s Junior Badminton Team will leave the island on Friday July 18th, 2014 to compete in the Pan Am Jnr Badminton Championships being staged in Guatemala City, Guatemala. Members of the Team that will be leaving are: Samuel Ricketts, Sean Wilson, Shane Wilson, Tremar Barham, Kathryn Wynter, Jade Clarke and Christina Petri. Over 14 countries are expected to participate at the Games and the Jamaican Team is expected to be in medal contention despite strong opposition from Brazil, Peru, Mexico, Surinam and Guatemala with USA and Canada being the 2 favorites for the Gold in the Team event.

The competition consists of a Team event followed by Individual events in: Boys’ Singles, Girls’ Singles, Boys’ Doubles, Girls’ Doubles and Mixed Doubles in Under 11, Under 13, Under 15, Under 17 and Under 19 categories. Other members of the squad who will join the team on the 21st of July to compete in the Individual sections include; Kenneth Anglin, Zane Reid, Adam Taylor, Esther Reynolds and Alana Bailey. Also attending the games will be Trevor McCain as an Umpire. Trevor McCain who is the current Chairman of the National Association of Badminton Umpires and Court Officials (NABUCO) is currently a Pan American Accredited Umpire and will be doing assessments to become a Pan American Certified Umpire. If he is successful he will be the 2nd Jamaican to ever achieve this level. The last time this was achieved was in 1999 at the US Open.

Also leaving the island will be Jamaica’s Badminton Team for the Commonwealth Games which is being staged in Glasgow, Scotland. Jamaica’s Team will consist of Gareth Henry, Garron Palmer, Geordine Henry (sister to Gareth) and Ruth Williams with Ricardo Teape as Manager and Dr Kingsley Ford as Coach. Badminton at the Games will be staged from July 23rd to August 3rd. Also attending the Games as an Umpire will be Joseph Clarke (Jamaica’s first and only ever BWF Umpire). The last time a Jamaican officiated in Badminton at the Commonwealth Games was in 1966 when Jamaica hosted the Games and Badminton was staged at the newly erected National Arena.
